During my second year of service as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I am working in the city of Huaraz with an private association from Spain. Huaraz is in the department of Ancash. Ancash is the home to many tradional Quechuan communities and beautiful, snow-capped mountains.
Dinner time at the orphanage
Meal times at the orphanage are always hectic. I ready the kids for eating and remind them about their table manners. They take turns saying the blessing. I also help the children with their homework, help at bathtime and put them in bed.
Afterschool Tutoring Program
I have coordinated an afterschool tutoring program for children that participate in a community kitchen. We work on homework, do arts and crafts, and practice English.
Mother's Knitting Workshop
A mother's group has formed to promote knitted handiworks. Here I am modeling an alpaca sweater done by the group.
Canchacuta Kindergarten Class
In a rural Quechua-speaking community, about 2 hours from Huaraz, I help teach a kindergarten class.
